The big picture

Collaborative art on the internet: from r/place to ARTCHIVE.ONE

For twenty years the internet has invented new ways to create together: a web page sold by the pixel, a Reddit canvas repainted by millions of hands. ARTCHIVE.ONE is the logical next step — and the first to be permanent, coherent and alive all at once. Here is the lineage, and why nothing like it had ever existed.

When strangers create together

The web has always dreamed of works made by many hands: not an image signed by one artist, but a collective object where every contribution counts and the whole exceeds each gesture.

Two experiments left a mark — the Million Dollar Homepage (2005) and r/place (2017, replayed in 2022). Each touched something deep. Neither went all the way.

r/place: the beautiful chaos

Reddit opens a blank canvas: one pixel every five minutes, millions of participants, communities that ally and erase one another. For a few days, the whole world paints the same image.

But r/place is an event, not an artwork: ephemeral by nature, made of pixels that overwrite each other, with no ownership and no memory. When it stops, all that remains is a screenshot.

The Million Dollar Homepage: owning a fragment

In 2005, a student sells the pixels of a web page, $1 each, a million in total. The brilliant idea: scarcity and permanence — your square is yours, forever.

But it is a frozen advertising grid, with no coherence and no artistic intent. Twenty years later, a large share of the links lead nowhere. The gesture was strong; the object, poor.

What was missing: permanence, coherence, art

r/place had the collective fervour but not the duration. The MDHP had the ownership but not the soul. Nobody had brought the three together: a work that lasts, that forms a coherent whole, and that is genuinely beautiful.

It also lacked an ingredient that did not exist in 2005, nor really in 2017: an AI able to paint each fragment in harmony with its neighbours.

ARTCHIVE.ONE: the living artwork

ARTCHIVE takes the best of this lineage and adds what was missing. You shape a block of a worldwide fresco; the AI paints it in harmony with the neighbouring blocks; it becomes your permanent property, with its own page and certificate.

The result is neither a fleeting event nor an ad grid, but a coherent collective artwork that grows live and stays forever. It is a new category — never seen before on the web.
