The Million Dollar Homepage, twenty years on

In 2005, a student sold a web page pixel by pixel and made a million dollars. The idea — owning a fragment of the internet, forever — was brilliant. Here is what it got right, what dated it, and who its heir is.

The 2005 stroke of genius

Alex Tew, a broke student, puts the 1,000,000 pixels of a web page up for sale: $1 per pixel, in 10×10 blocks. Within months it all sold — a million dollars, and a page written into web history.

The power of the idea is two words: scarcity (a million, not one more) and permanence (“your space, for life”). Owning a piece of the internet.

What dated it

The Million Dollar Homepage is a grid of advertising banners: no coherence, no artistic intent — a mosaic of logos. And “for life” has its limits: twenty years on, many of the links lead nowhere.

The gesture of ownership was powerful; the object owned stayed poor and static.

The urge to own a fragment of a shared work never went away — it was waiting for a better medium. ARTCHIVE keeps the scarcity (limited blocks, a rising price, editions that close) and the permanence (page + certificate), but replaces the ad grid with art.

The numbers

One thousand by one thousand: a million pixels on a single grid, sold in blocks of at least ten pixels a side, one dollar per pixel. Within months the page filled up, the last square even went to auction — and the total reached the million dollars its name promised.

A student's idea, executed at the right moment. But twenty years on, many of the links sold lead nowhere: the page remained, its content went dark.

The idea that outlives its execution

What the Million Dollar Homepage invented was the desire to OWN a fragment of the Internet — lasting, located, yours. That desire is intact; it is its medium that aged.
